In heavy equipment service the most expensive thing is the time an expert spends travelling. A technician in the field gets stuck, tries to describe it over the phone, is not understood — and eventually somebody boards a plane.
What they did
Caterpillar launched CAT LIVESHARE, an augmented reality based live video support platform for its dealer network. What the field technician sees is shared with the expert at head office; the expert draws over the live image to say “open that cover, take this part out” in real time. The platform was built specifically for heavy machinery repair, troubleshooting and maintenance.
The measured result
The joint announcement describes what the platform does but gives no numeric outcome. A widely repeated claim — “Level 1 technicians reach 95% first-time fix rates” — appears in neither Caterpillar’s nor Scope AR’s publications, so it is not in this text.

What it means for a manufacturer
For any manufacturer with distributors or a wide service network the problem is the same: the knowledge is central, the fault is in the field. Putting expert and technician at the same machine removes the travel. A digital twin takes it one step further — expert and technician can also meet at the same virtual machine.
