Road hazard recognition moved from touchscreens into virtual reality, where the trainee has to name every risk they see aloud.

Spotting a road hazard is a learnable skill: the pedestrian about to step out between parked cars, the driver about to open a door, the oncoming traffic. Taught in a classroom it becomes knowledge; it does not become reflex.

What they did

UPS moved its hazard recognition lessons into virtual reality modules. Moving through a virtual street, the trainee has to say out loud the risks they see — the pedestrian, the parked car, the oncoming vehicle. The modules replaced the touchscreen devices used at the training centres.

The measured result

  • The VR modules went live at nine UPS Integrad training centres in the US and Europe
  • Touchscreen hazard lessons were replaced by the VR modules
  • The rollout started with package delivery vehicle drivers

UPS’s publication gives no comparison of training duration; claims such as “from eight hours to two” circulate elsewhere and we could not verify them, so they are not here.

What it means for a manufacturer

Safety topics that turn on attention and judgement cannot be taught by describing them. What the virtual environment adds is that it stops the participant being a passive listener and makes them the decision maker. The same structure fits forklift traffic, work at height or walking a line edge.
